蓋茨投資數十億美元聯手東芝開發核反應堆
微軟創始人比爾-蓋茨和日本東芝公司將聯手開發下一代核反應堆----這種新型反應堆無需重新添加燃料，便可最長運轉100年。
北京時間3月23日早間消息，東芝公司(Toshiba Corp)和微軟公司董事長比爾.蓋茨擁有的泰拉能源公司(TerraPower)將合作開發下一代核反應堆，這種核反應堆能運作達100年之久而不用添加燃料，目前的輕水反應堆每隔幾年就需要添加燃料。
實際上由蓋茨擁有的泰拉能源公司將和東芝公司共同關注行波反應堆(Traveling-Wave Reactor,TWR)，TWR使用貧化鈾為燃料。TWRs的規模可能在10萬千瓦到100萬千瓦之間，可與當今很多反應堆的功率相媲美。
作為日本核電系統主要生產商的東芝公司，已經開發了超小型反應堆的構思，即超安全、小型和簡單(4S)，這種反應堆可以連續運作30年。東芝預計其輸出功率約為1萬千瓦的超小型4S設計今秋會得到美國的批准，到2014年開始建立首個這樣的反應堆。
東芝認為運用在4S反應堆上的科技，其中的80%左右也可以在TWR上使用。但TWR面臨的一個問題就是能承受核反應堆這麼久的發展原料，這個問題大概需要10年以上的時間才能解決。若努力獲得成功，東芝可能會進行反應堆的大規模生產。
預計蓋茨會利用他個人的財富支持TWRs的開發，可能會投資數千億日元。
